Accessories for Boudoir

This post is going out to all the lovely ladies who are a part of the Boudoir Marathon with Ella Photography this weekend and for the ladies who plan on doing one in the future!  We often get a lot of questions on what to bring; which makes sense since it's not an everyday thing.  So here are a few ideas on how to accessories the unmentionables.

Start with the basics: jewelry, knee highs and pumps, these few items really help complete a set.  For instance, pearls or crystals accented with a ribbon are dainty pieces that add a touch of glamor to a bra and panty set or even a corset.  Also, don't be afraid to layer your jewelry, sometimes more is actually better!
Photo from Karla Snider

The great thing about knee highs and pumps is that you have the flexibility to play with texture, color and style with brings a new life to your lingerie.  Plus, you probably already own some kick ass shoes  that you love, so why not rock them??

The Secret is Out!

Do you know how hard it is to keep fabulous news to myself?? Luckily, Isabella of Ella Photography spilled the beans today (which means I'm in the clear to share hahaha).

This past summer, Isabella had an awesome idea for a bridal shoot.  She wanted to capture the beauty of our city and the elegance that only a bride can bring on their big day.  In order to pull off this idea, she decided to team-up with some pretty cool peeps.  Check out this line up:

Creative Direction: Isabella of Ella Photography and Natasha Rosa del Vecchio
Photography: Isabella of Ella Photography
Flowers: O.xide Design
Headpieces and Jewelry: Jennifer Laoun-Rubenstein
Makeup: Janet Persaud (aka Me hehe)
Hair: Malina Tang
Dresses: Melissa Gentile Couture
Models: Annie (Agency: Specs) and Sophie (Agency: Dulcedo)
Video: my 11:11 events

Soooo what's the big deal? We do shoots all the time right? Well, Isabella sent the photos to CHIC Magazine and they decided to do a 6 PAGE SPREAD which will be released in THIS JANUARY 2012 issue!!  Which is right around the corner people (woot! woot!).

Here's the thing, that's about all I can tell you lol.  However, you can take a sneak peak of some of the action caught on film by my 11:11 events. Enjoy!

30 Day Challenge!

So December is finally here and we only have 30 days left until a new year begins!! Are you excited? I am, but I'm always excited lol.  It's true, the little things in life keep me pumped and I want to share that excitement with you.  My latest victory is actually what sparked this idea and I hope everyone joins in so that we can end 2011 with a BANG.

In some ways, I feel like I have serious commitment issues.  I like trying new things, but normally have a hard time sticking to them (sound like any of you out there??).  For instance, working out.  I get the benefits and when I'm actually at the gym or playing some sort of sport, I love how I feel afterwards.  However, it was never enough for me to actually make it a part of my routine.  Until November 1st 2011, I decided to join the Moksha Challenge (insert eery music here).

EyEnvy's unique formula is suppose to help practically double your lash length and help stimulate the regrowth of hair that is no longer there. So say goodbye to falsies and hello to a wink that will always get your way!

Time Flies when You're Having Fun.

Between photo shoots, trade shows and a giveaway, it's been a busy week.  No complaining over here; I love being busy =).  Anywho, here are a few highlights from this week; enjoy!

My weekend began with an awesome couple, Meredith and Mike, who were doing their engagement shoot with Isabella of Ella Photography.  This was actually our second attempt since Mother Nature was not on our side the first time around.  Truthfully speaking, it worked out for the best because Saturday was such a gorgeous day!!

Food for Thought

Did you ever think that a fruit's water could be the answer to healthier looking skin as well as a healthier body?  Well allow me to introduce you to one of Mother Nature's best gifts on earth, the coconut.  While this fruit can be used in many different forms like milk, pulp or the flesh, I will only focus on the water.

Eye Want Kandy

Want a little more bling for your eyes but hate the glittery mess that it leaves behind?  Well here is an awesome solution for that extra glitz.  Eye Kandy, which is an eye and body glitter, uses a solution that keeps the sparkle in place; so less mess and more glam all day long.

For the Love of Lashes!

This week I had the opportunity to work at the trade show Esthetique Spa International held at the Palais des Congrès with Jem Beauty Supply.  We were super busy doing demonstrations for two fabulous products which I will share with you this week; one of which is Red Cherry Lashes, Have you ever heard of them before? Well be sure to remember that name because it's a definite must have when it comes to falsies.

Picture from Colored Faces
You won't find these bad boys in store, in fact you'll have to order them online but they're worth every penny. These 100% natural human hair lashes can be compared to brands like MAC and are six times less in price. MAC lashes retail at $18+ whereas you can get a pair of Red Cherry's starting at $2.99 on sites like Jem Beauty Supply.  Keep in mind that right now there are shipping costs, which is $12.95, but I was informed that it will be free within a month. If you're in a hurry, buy a few lashes and you've already saved a tone of money.

Fundamentals to Foundation

At times, trying to find the right foundation can be a daunting task. With so many choices nowadays how do you really know what is the best thing for you?? To help narrow down your search, I'll share with you a few tips I've learned along the way.

It all begins with understanding your skin.  This will enable you to pick the right formula and avoid a cakey mask or foundation running down your face.  For instance, if you have oily skin, choose a foundation that says it is oil-free or oil control formula.  The same applies for dry skin too; there are formulas that are hydrating or "moisture rich" that will help rejuvenate your skin.  By understanding you skin needs, you have a better chance of achieving that flawless finish.

Next, it's all about coverage. The end result we want to achieve is a flawless face, but some skin will need a little more tlc than others.  For those lovely faces that have no breakouts or blemishes and have been blessed with no bags under their eyes, opt for a tinted moisturizer to help balance out the depth of your skin. That being said, let's discuss what are some of the options available!

The Low Down Dirty Truth...

Makeup has the reputation of beautifying women and boosting confidence too but there is a very ugly side to it and their tools.  Prepare yourself for some hard hitting facts and solutions to minimize your risks of bacteria invading your face.

First off, a few questions!  How often do you clean you makeup brushes or tools like eyelash curler?  Do you share any of these tools?  Where do you store them and how often do you use them?  Do you share your makeup? How long have you owned your mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick  or gloss etc?  I am asking you these questions just to get you thinking and hopefully change a few bad habits.  No passing judgements over here!!! I too am guilty of some of these sins...

Would You Jump in a Pond with a Full Face of Makeup On?

Well that's exactly what one of my bride's did on her WEDDING DAY!!  Seriously, I can't make this stuff up.  Check out her testimonial about her awesome day!

Andra Syvanen's Testimonial

"This past summer was a busy one for me: in addition to finishing off my thesis, I was also planning a wedding. Although we had a vision of a casual backyard affair, I was still interested in getting "gussied up" for the occasion. I mean, how often does a girl get married anyway?!

I was referred to Janet by a good friend who had worked with her on a few photo shoots. My friend is already incredibly photogenic, but when I saw how stunning Janet had made her look in the photos, I had a really good feeling about getting in touch with her.

Janet was very receptive and super friendly in all email correspondence. She seemed enthusiastic, and I got a really positive vibe from her right off the bat. She responded very well to my concerns and ideas and was so accommodating at every level. She even agreed to drive the 2 hours out to the wedding location so that my makeup could be done conveniently on location.

When she arrived with her lovely mom (they make a great team!) she was all smiles. Despite the craziness that was going on all around us, she made me feel cool, calm, and collected as she worked her magic. She also seemed excited, which was great!

As people came in the room to check up on the progress of my makeup and I saw their smiles and nods of approval, I had total confidence that Janet was doing an awesome job - this hunch would be confirmed when I finally got to take a look. It was amazing. She was able to take the vision that I had so inelegantly tried to explain and recreated it perfectly.

When it came time to turn her attention to my mom, I was a little apprehensive: my mother can be a bit of a tough customer but I really wanted her to feel beautiful and confident. All my concerns melted away as I listened to the laughs coming out of the room. Janet and her mom put my mom right at ease, and she ended up leaving the room absolutely glowing.  We both got so many compliments on our makeup - that it looked really natural and professional and that it fit the occasion perfectly.

Now, as anyone who has ever gotten married can tell you, things will happen on your wedding day that you do not plan. Case in point, the spontaneous series of jumps into our pond taken by several members of the wedding party, myself and my husband included (I changed out of my wedding dress before taking the plunge, for all of you who are cringing right now). While my wedding hair was ruined, I emerged from the pond with completely intact makeup, which in my mind is further attestation of just how amazing Janet's work is. She truly made the day a special one, and I thank her for her professionalism and kindness throughout the whole process!"

Model in a Bottle is a MUST HAVE!

So you've spent some serious time getting dolled up for tonight's big event only to have your make up fade away into the dark as you dance the night away... Well it's simple - Model in a Bottle, a make up setting spray with a matte finish that holds your work in place all day long.

On the Right Track!

Initially I started writing a post about cleaning your makeup and brushes (I promise that will be my next post).  As I was looking for facts, I came across one of my binders that I tend to scribble in.  Let's just say this binder is a combination of ideas, plans, lists, randomness and sometimes my thoughts; which actually starts off with what I am afraid of but then (being the nerd that I am) I set goals to counteract them.

I was really surprised with this one list because I've managed to accomplish quite a few things off of it.. But what really makes me proud is that it was written on March 30th, the day I lost my 9 to 5 job.  I've said it before, it was a really scary moment in my life because I've ALWAYS had a job.  I think I felt every emotion possible in the span of 24 hours but I am glad that I went through what I did and even happier to document my determination.  So in true Janet fashion, I decided to share some of the things I wrote which will also give me the opportunity to thank some really incredible people =).

Lauren's New Beginning =)

A quick recap to make sure everyone is on the same page; in May I collaborated with Isabella of Ella Photography to launch a contest to celebrate hitting 100 fans on my facebook page.  I was really happy with the response in terms of entries but boy was it ever hard to select a winner.  At the end of the day, with the help of Isabella, we were able to narrow it down to two winners!  So get ready to read one of the winning stories and get a sneak peak of some behind the scenes action; meet Lauren Scott and her awesome pup Vito.

Beat the Heat Makeup Ideas! - Face edition

Holly hotness! Talk about heat wave! I love this weather but your makeup may not.  It's only natural that your body reacts with sweat to help keep you cool, but it doesn't mean your makeup has to wash away with it. So enjoy a few easy tips to keep your face in check.

Take time to prime. Yes, this simple step helps prolong foundation and keeps color rich.  All you need is about a pea-size amount of this lightweight serum to cover your whole face.  Things to consider when deciding which primer to use (yes, there are many to choose from), what does your skin need?  Is your skin oily or more mature? Prone to breakouts or really sensitive? My favorite brand, Cover Fx, actually addresses these needs. It's a two-in-one deal for awesome makeup and fabulous skin.

A Peak at Katherine & Eugen's Engagement Shoot

Montreal's weather has a reputation of being unreliable and considering the last few outdoor shoots planned with Isa of Ella Photography were postponed due to rain, we had to have a serious talk with Mother Nature.  Luckily for us, our shoot was actually two hours out of the city, in Sutton and negotiations were a success.  We had INCREDIBLE weather (the drive home was a different story, but hey! we weren't taking pics of that hehe). Imagine the excitement when we arrived at the beautiful Vignoble Chapelle Ste Agnès Vineyard and had nothing but blue skies and beautiful landscaping!

To give you an idea, here is my story...  A few months ago, my "day job" went through another restructuring.  I was placed in a position where my current role was terminated but was given the option to pursue something totally different from what I normally did at work.  With only a few hours to decide and several deep breaths, I decided to walk away from the place that was a part of my life for over five years.  Scared, nervous and really overwhelmed, I knew in that moment it was the right thing for me.  I did not want to feel stuck in a job that I didn't like for the sake of having a job.  Luckily for me I have an incredible mother who is super supportive and reminded me that when one door closes another one opens.  This was a chance for me to pursue something new but more importantly what I love.  With those words of wisdom came a flood of love and support from so many people, also a lot of opportunities too!  Now here I am, trying to give you the same love and support that I've been so fortunate to receive.

So what are you waiting for?!?!? What ever it is, a new career, just graduated or contemplating where you want to go in life or even over coming adversity; just SUBMIT YOUR STORY and let's celebrate with an awesome photo shoot and makeup too.  I'm big on snacks so don't be surprise it cupcakes are thrown your way hehehe.

It's important to remember these moments; celebrate your victories and celebrate the challenges you learned from.

Accepting entries until June 25th 2011 11:59pm

Bethany's Boudoir Shoot

I initially met Bethany during my internship a few years ago.  She always had this rocking personality with a look that could be summed up as "the Girl next door", or at least that is what I thought!  This shoot totally changed my perspective.  In some of her shots, she resembles Britney Spears but you can see for yourself.

I'm Addicted to You...

Everyone has at least one thing they can't live without; that guilty pleasure that leaves you feening for your next fix.  For me it's my lip balm; more specifically Blistex.  I constantly find myself reapplying even when my lips do not need it but I just love the tingling sensation.  All you Blistex users know exactly what I am talking about! I am notorious for leaving my stuff anywhere I possibly can (and forgetting where I left it too); which has left me continually buying a replacement because I need it with me all the time...

L's Look

Sometimes the best looks are the simplest ones and that was the main concept behind Miss L's look for the DRPT Clothing shoot.  Considering she was modeling crew neck sweaters, I needed a look that was relax like the attire but sultry to add that sense of femininity to the package.

My name is Janet and... I am a Dropout...

Slightly deceiving because I know traditionally this phrase is associated to a persons' education; I, however, am not using it in that sense.  It's about dropping out of the normal expectations that we set for ourselves and pursuing the things we are passionate about.  This is the philosophy behind a new urban clothing brand based out of Montreal, Dropout Clothing or DRPT CLOTHING.

Painting Update

So tack on an additional 4 hours to this massive painting and an easel to help my back out; I am now offically two thirds of the way done (insert mini victory dance here)!  It is a serious piece for my novice skills, but I am looking forward to completing it.

One step closer to finishing!

Modern Tribe

A couple of months have past since SynesthASIA; a Montreal charity fashion show, where I had the pleasure of using my makeup skills to help out.  This year all proceeds went to the Abhilasha Project, a non-profit organization focused on education to help change in India and throughout the developing world.  I finally received a few more pictures of my work, thanks to Sophie Tremblay, and wanted to share them with you lovely readers.

Painting in Progress

After showcasing a few pieces from my oil painting class, I've received quite a few requests to make larger versions. It's really flattering and overwhelming at the same time.  I never expected such a response to my paintings, but my teacher is fabulous and has said from the beginning that if the exercises were completed properly, they would look like works of art.

I am currently working on a 18" by 24" piece, which is the biggest canvas I have attempted thus far.  Basically, I am adapting one of the exercises I did in class to this larger board and let me tell you, it is a serious task!  Six hours of work have already been put in and I am only a third of the way to completing it.

Three hours in and a lot left to do..

A Different Perspective

Fair warning, the following post has nothing to do about make up but everything to do with my artistic journey.  I thought it was really important to gain a different perspective for my brushes.  I wanted to learn how to be more abstract, which really meant for me learning to let go and trusting my creative instincts a little more.  I could have easily taken more courses or seminars with other professionals make up artists, but I wanted to step out of my box and gain a new perspective on something similar to what I do, basically a different approach to my craft. This lead me to oil painting.

After much consideration and the persuasiveness of my best friend Anita, I decided to post what I've painted so far.  My hesitations steam from the fact that I am not the best drawer in the world; unless I am drawing stick figures, I'm a champ! lol... Seriously, at work I refuse to draw when we play our version of Pictionary, I rather guest and save myself from the embarrassment.  Anywho, the paintings I am posting are basically exercises I've done in class, so please be gentle hehe.

On a side note, it's incredible how similar the approaches are and how a lot of the skills I am learning through these classes are transferable to make up application too. Everything from the tools I use to colour control or even blending are continuously used to paint up a master piece, just on different canvases.

M.I.A. but always working

My first post for the year; so let me begin by wishing you all a very happy new year! I hope your holidays were amazing and fabulous like you are. It's been a very busy few weeks, hence the reason for the lack of chat on my lovely blog.

Although the holidays were extremely busy, I loved every second of it! I ended off my year with this incredible photo shoot courteous of an amazing photographer Dory Chamoun of N'Focus Productions. Here is a sneak peek at a few shots from the shoot =)
